Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs), built on the trust model of the e-passport, are becoming a foundational credential for global travel identity. In a recent interview, Dion Chamberlain, Chief Advisor for Traveller Identification at New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs, shared how operational pilots are accelerating rapidly. These trials are providing real insights to refine global standards as border agencies make strategic investments in interoperable technology.
Because security at border touchpoints is paramount, the development and rollout of DTCs are progressing at a more cautious pace than other verifiable credentials. However, real travellers are already being processed using DTCs today. Chamberlain expects this adoption to grow significantly over the next “5 to 10 years, where it will become more and more used. But right now, we are very much in the learning stage.”
