You might think that walking the famed Camino de Santiago pilgrimage once would be enough for one lifetime. I thought so too after arriving, exhausted, in the city of Santiago de Compostela after my trek; but I’m already thinking about doing it again.
Must-do
You can attempt the Camino de Santiago even on a short trip. After flying from Hong Kong to Madrid, I had just a few days in Spain, so I took a train to the city of Sarria, about 100km from Santiago de Compostela. I then walked for five days. Setting off at 5am and walking until noon to avoid the worst of the June heat, I covered 20km a day.
I know it sounds like madness, but I love challenging adventures. That said, by my third day I felt like giving up. I was saved by a fellow pilgrim who offered me a walking stick and ended up accompanying me for the rest of the journey. You’ll find many wonderful people like that on the Camino.
